The African American Heritage Society of Charles County, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering awareness of the culture and historical contributions of African Americans to Southern Maryland and the nation.

Founded in 1974 by Veronica Coates and the late William A. Diggs, the Society has welcomed both local and international visitors through its doors.

Additionally, the group has sponsored historical exhibitions at the Smithsonian Institution as well as churches, libraries, schools, and universities throughout the state.

The Society’s collection includes displays highlighting the contributions of local and national African Americans, historical memorabilia, vintage appliances, housewares, and kitchen utensils once owned by locals during slavery.

This Christmas, the group will host a Heritage Christmas.  All visitors are welcome.

During this year’s celebration, the group will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Southern Maryland Food Bank.  Donations encouraged.
